Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum

The Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum (APGTF), originally known as the Advanced Power Generation Task Force, was formed in 1999 to provide the focus for the Power Generation Sector in the UK for research, development and demonstration activities on near-to-zero and zero emission technologies from fossil fuel, biomass, and associated technologies. Recently its main focus has been on carbon abatement technologies including carbon capture and storage. The APGTF is an industry-led stakeholder group. A broad range of interests is represented involving power generators, equipment manufacturers and fuel suppliers, and it has strong links with the relevant trade associations and other groupings (including the Association of Electricity Producers, BEAMApower, the Industrial Power Association, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, Coalimp and COALPRO). There is also representation from the oil and gas sector, the consultancy sector, the research community, Government (DECC, BIS and HSE), and the funding agencies (ETI, TSB and the Research Councils).

Objectives

The objectives of the APGTF are to provide the strategic focus in the UK on near-to-zero and zero emission technologies from fossil fuel, biomass and associated technologies so as to ensure that:

• Strategies are developed and implemented within the UK and globally that support the UK’s climate change goal of reducing CO₂ emissions both within the UK and abroad
• The UK has secure, clean, affordable energy as we become increasingly dependent on imported fuels
• UK industry has the technologies to allow it to take advantage of the UK and global market opportunities that will arise in the power generation sector
• Collaboration and knowledge sharing are promoted in the power generation and energy supply sector
• There is a significant contribution to UK wealth creation

Tasks

• To identify research, development and demonstration and early deployment (RDD&D) strategy targets and priorities for the UK power generation sector that contribute to reducing climate change and that gain maximum economic benefit
• To promote this RDD&D strategy throughout the sector, including industry, the academic/research community, Government, the EU and other stakeholder groups, ensuring that all relevant parts of the value chain are involved and that sufficient budget is allocated
• To promote and review both new and existing RDD&D programmes to ensure that they are in line with the overall RDD&D strategy
• To ensure that the widest engagement with relevant international initiatives is facilitated
• To provide a technology focus whilst working with other bodies who take a more active lead in policy and regulation
• To promote activities and programmes that ensure that the necessary people, skills and underpinning science are in place to deliver the RDD&D strategy
• To be recognised as the preferred industry-led body to give advice and information for all relevant governmental and independent groups
• To be the delivery partner for CATs in the Energy Generation & Supply Knowledge Transfer Network (EG&S KTN)
