A Technology Strategy for Power Generation

• To establish a path to cut the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by about 2050
• To maintain reliability of supply
• To promote competitive markets in the UK and beyond
• To ensure every home is adequately and affordably heated

In order to achieve these goals, the Government has recognised that fossil fuels will continue to play a significant role, both in the UK and abroad, for many decades to come. However, ways must be found for reducing their CO2 emissions in an acceptable manner. The UK government, the EU and the USA are now developing technology strategies for fossil fuels that focus on the main issues addressed in the White Paper, namely, security of supply and global warming.

Scope

The Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum (APGTF) provides the focus for the Power Generation sector in the UK on the research and development activities on fossil fuel, including biomass and waste, and associated technologies including carbon sequestration. Currently, it is working with the UK Government to help it develop its technology strategy for fossil and biomass fuels leading to zero emissions. The APGTF is organising this workshop to:

• Present an overview of UK, EU and USA policy and programmes relating to fossil energy technologies
• Propose a strategy for fossil and biomass technology development in the UK and its integration with other EU countries
• Propose a research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme for the fossil and biomass sector in the UK which leads to zero emissions
• Discuss the proposed strategy for the UK, review the programme and prioritise the activities.

The Workshop will consist of invited presentations covering policy and strategy for power generation in the UK, EU and USA, together with the APGTF’s proposals for a technology strategy and RD&D programme. This will be followed by a session in which all delegates will be invited to participate. This session will discuss the APGTF’s proposals and prioritise the activities. The output from the Workshop will be fed into the APGTF’s strategy report, which will then be presented to the DTI.

Who should attend

The Workshop should be of interest to: R and D workers in the field; strategy and technology managers; representatives of funding agencies; policy makers etc. Representatives would be expected from universities and industry, including the supply chain.
