First Announcement, 1st APGTF Workshop

Research & Development for Advanced Power Generation Utilising Fossil Fuels

DTI Conference Centre, 1 Victoria Street, London, 4 - 5 September 2000.

Over the next 25 years, global energy demand is predicted to increase by 2 - 3% per annum. For electricity, 3500 GW of new generating plant will be required over this period to meet the increased demand - which represents a total global business worth in excess of £2000 bn. Predictions for the next 20 years indicate that 70-80% of the new power generating plant will be fossil fuelled and a similarly high percentage contribution is expected beyond 2020. Environmental and commercial pressures mean that significant developments will be required in fossil-fuelled power technologies for the UK to remain competitive in this sector, both for new plant and the upgrade of existing plant.

The Advanced Power Generation Task Force (APGTF) provides the focus for the Power Generation sector in the UK on the research and development activities on fossil fuel, including biomass and waste, and associated technologies.

SCOPE

The APGTF, in conjunction with the EPSRC and the Foresight Energy and Natural Environment Panel, are organising this forum to:

  • review current R and D activities and progress against targets for new and existing plant
  • hear the needs of industry for R and D and explore collaboration internationally
  • present and discuss a Consultation Document giving a strategy for R and D in fossil-fuelled power generation and associated technologies, looking out to 2030
  • consider the priorities for the underpinning activities outlined in the Consultation Document.

The output from the workshops that will be run during the Forum will be fed into the final Strategy Document.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

R and D workers in the field; strategy and technology managers and directors; representatives of funding agencies; policy makers etc. Representatives would be expected from universities and industry including the supply chain.
