CO2 Capture and Storage Mission to Australia Dissemination Event
DTI Conference Centre, 1 Victoria Road, London, 15th January 2003
Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and geological storage has the potential to play a significant and strategic role worldwide in terms of CO2 mitigation and energy security:This has been recognised in the UK Energy White Paper and has led to a review of the feasibility of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) in the UK. Australia is at the forefront of countries developing CCS projects, and is prominent in associated R&D, resource assessment and risk/environmental analysis.
This DTI Global Watch Mission visited Australia in February 2004 and addressed aspects of CO2 capture and geological storage and many of the management issues that the UK feasibility review has shown to be of great importance in considering the deployment of CCS in the UK. The Mission focused on:
- CCS projects that are being planned for deployment in Australia
- the technologies that are being considered
- resource assessment and modelling work that has been undertaken to examine relevant sources and potential ‘sinks’
- legal/regulatory issues
- stakeholder consultation that would have a bearing on CO2 capture, transport and storage in the UK
The Mission was co-ordinated by the Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum (APGTF), which is an industry-led ‘Associated Programme’ of UK Energy and Natural Environment Foresight. The APGTF was established to identify and promote R&D strategy targets and priorities in the UK both for economic benefit and improvement of the environment.
This free one day event will report back the findings from the Global Watch Mission to Australia, through a series of presentations by the Mission team. A written report of the Mission findings will also be launched.
