Under the EU FP5, three R, D&D Thematic Networks (PowerClean, CO2NET, and CAME-GT) were established to valorise the work being carried on throughout Europe into advanced power generation, carbon dioxide capture and storage, and gas turbine development. These networks have produced reports (1, 2, 3, 4) identifying in each area the current state of the art, the important market factors, R, D & D needs, and a strategy for advancement. This report distils the findings of the three groups to produce a common strategy paper for the development of power generation in Europe over the next thirty years.
Recognising the potential importance of CO2 capture and storage (CCS), the UK Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum (APGTF) – with support from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Global Watch Service – organised a second Technology Mission on the subject, this time to Australia to build on the earlier, highly successful one to the USA and Canada in 2002.
